Third Grade Music

Third grade is a critical year in the music literacy journey because it is the year where we learn the most new content in the music room. We will learn more sophisticated rhythm elements that are increasingly abstract, and we will expand our knowledge of time signatures and conducting patterns to include 3 and 4 beat meter.

This is the first year the students will begin to learn solfege (a system of naming notes in a scale) outside of the simple five note scale learned in earlier grades, and they will read, create, and compose with these new elements. We will also begin the process of learning to sing in two parts by using partner songs (two different songs sung at the same time).

We will continue to play many music games and learn complex folk dances this year, and we will progress in using instruments such as rhythm sticks, barred instruments, and drums in our lessons.
