First Grade Music

In first grade, it is very important that students have the opportunity to move and play. It is critical at this stage that the students internalize what the music feels like to them and how to identify different rhythmic and melodic sounds by ear. because of this, we learn a lot in first grade music by moving to the music, playing with scarves, rhythm sticks and instruments, and playing games!

This year, the students will begin to learn the names of the rhythmic and melodic elements introduced in kindergarten. high and low sounds are labeled as sol and mi (part of a system known as solfege used for labeling notes in a scale), and basic rhythm divisions are named. We will learn to read and compose basic patterns using these elements using classroom manipulatives, and often in the form of a game.

We will use barred instruments in the composition process and to play simple one or two note patterns. We will also continue to incorporate the use of simple percussion such as drums and rhythm sticks into our lessons. First grade music involves a lot of storytelling, puppets, and incorporation of children's literature. We're never bored here!

  • First grade is so much fun! after the first month of school, try asking your child what their favorite music game or activity is.
